Struggling Middle Class College Students
Topic Area:
Education |
Subcategory:
College and Funding
Topic:
I speak from experience when I state this topic on how middle class college students struggle to get a equal oppertunity for FAFSA vs students that are not middle class . This is a struggle that is well over looked. Its not fair that almost all of middle class students do not qualify for FAFSA or many of the other finanical oppertunities. There should not be a division between dependent and independent students because in this economy and how hard it is to find a job and make money to support yourself to get an education, I think that it is highly recomended for every person to qualify for FAFSA.
Why is it urgent for America now:
This is urgent because education is a key goal in most college students lives. So why have a division between middle class and lower class. In my opinion we are all lower class because of the economy the way that it is. I come from a family of 5 both my mom and dad are still married and it is a struggle for them to keep me and my sister in college and still support my other siblings and we are still considered high above the line to qualify for FAFSA from what the FAFSA providers say. This is a topic that needs to be looked at because in a way i find this as discrimination.

Oro Valley in Desperate Need of Water
Topic Area:
Environment |
Subcategory:
Water
Topic:
Oro Valley is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States, and with all the growth and new families there is a shortage of water.
Why is it urgent for America now:
It seem that the town of Oro Valley, AZ is having trouble with water conservation and just having enough for the amount of growth that has been going on. This fast growing town is looking at what may be a $172 million water bill to bring water from the Colorado River to add water to the wells that have been dropping 5-6 feet every year. On top of the problems Oro Valley has with the water, in a recent developement, 16inch a water main was ruptured do to mismaked parts of the sight. The water main was left running for 20 minutes before shut down losing an undisclosed amout of water. With all of these water problems the towm of Oro Valley is looking for ways to set special spiggots in the newly built house so home owners have the option to use grey water instead of the fresh drinking water to do things such as laundry and waterin grass. Also they are trying to make it so there is always hot water running through the pipes of the house so when a water fixture is turned on there will be hot water right away, minimizing the loss of water during "wait time" for the hot water to come through. Though Oro Valley is attempting to take on many changes, it is unknown if these little changes will help the water problems with the constant growth and water loss of the city.

Helping other countries
Topic Area:
Foreign Relations |
Subcategory:
Governments
Topic:
The United States is the most powerful country in the world. It's forefathers worked hard to make it that way. However, we, as a country, are very selfish. Helping other countries that have much more less than we do is important to the country's image. Celebrities and important people do their part on their own in helping other countries and their organization, which is a very good thing. However, the country as a whole needs to help those countries that need help.
Why is it urgent for America now:
Many people die of no health care, starvation, dehydration, and so many other things. We here in the States have plenty of that and we just need to share the wealth. As Rig Veda once said, one should perform karma with nonchalance without expecting the benefits because sooner or later, one shall definitely get the fruits

Women in media

Subcategory:
Body Image and the Media
Topic:
We all know that sex sells. However, is selling a pair of designer jeans worth lowering the self-confidence of millions of girls and demeaning women all over the world? The portrayal of women and girls in ads and commercials is so unrealistic and perfect that girls all across the country are permanately disappointed with their bodies and looks. This constant state of feeling inferior has a violent and sad consequence. According to a study by the University of Alberta, 10% of girls experience at least one depressive episode a year. Suicide rates have increased drastically, and the young girls of America are in danger of suffering from their own self-criticisms.
Why is it urgent for America now:
Eating disorders, depression, and suicide levels of girls and women are higher than ever. The models that females in our society have to look up to are all perfectly made up, impossibly skinny, and completely unrealistic. There is so much pressure on young girls to be like the women they see on covers of magazines, they will starve themselves in an attempt to feel confident and beautiful. What so many girls don't understand is that they are already beautiful. They don't understand that the media creates an expectation that is simply unattainable. It is urgent that advertisers and other media companies realize the effect that they are having on girls unintentionally. It is just as urgent for young women to see themselves as they are and accept it, not compare themselves to the airbrushed and photoshopped women they see on TV and in magazines every day. We need to stop and look around us and see what is real and what is not. We also need to do whatever we can to help young women who are having trouble and try to prevent the number of girls struggling with themselves from increasing any more.

Americans will easily just give out money to other countries but thats it. A lot of times the head of the country is corrupt and keeps it all for himself. We need to give supplies, not money to the individuals in the countries. Help them establish ways to provide for themselves as well
Why is it urgent for America now:
This is urgent now because if this world is going to survive we can't just have a few major countries doing everything, it has to be a worldwide effort.

Recycling in Corporations
Topic Area:

Subcategory:
Recycling
Topic:
Recycling has become a major issue in the United States. Although, the go green campaign has reminded more people about the environment, the major businesses of america still continue to not have a recycling plan for their business.the United States total waste is approx. 250 million tons. If Businesses choose to recycle they actually save $40 per ton recycled. this means if businesses recycle 40% of their waste, businesses in total will save 4 billion dollars.I think the government can give grants to promote recycling and research to better methods of recycling. And to finance the grants the government can tax 15-30 % of a corporations profit due to recycling.
Why is it urgent for America now:
This is more urgent now because if we do not implement a plan now then we may cause serious damage to our environment.

Teachers in our country are lacking the discipline and drive to inspire the children of america.
Why is it urgent for America now:
The education system today is failing our most precious asset:children. With budget cuts reducing payment to teachers, they have become unmotivated and devolve quickly into the ruler toting hell spawn from our nightmares. And not only that, but with the need for them, they can get away with almost anything and still retain their teaching status. We must raise our education foundations and begin anew, or rebuild the decaying monolith that once was the envy of all nations!

Its not fair that you are legal to give your life up for the USA at the age of 18 but you cant have a beer at the age of 18. I feel that either change the age of going to war to 21 like the drinking or change the age of drinking to 18 like the war.
Why is it urgent for America now:
it is urgent now because there are cadets that are 18 and have dedicated their lives to the USA but cant have a beer.

America is getting too involved with outside affairs.
Topic Area:
Foreign Relations |
Subcategory:
Afghanistan
Topic:
America is getting too involved with the affairs of other countries. We need to stop stepping in and let them solve their problem by themselves.
Why is it urgent for America now:
It is urgent now because by getting involved, many countries come to expect hat we will come to their aid and help them with their issues. That means we will be sending in our military and having them try to restore peace with is often life threatening to them. For example, Iraq. We went in to help them, but so many times there were shoot outs or bombing because they did not want the Americans there. Also, a lot of times people hate the Americans for it. Why would they want some people coming into their country acting like they are better than everyone else and trying to restore order in a country that is not even theirs? It is not safe and we are just asking for problems by trying to get involved.
